No time to post new pictures today - maybe tomorrow.
We split up into two groups today and each group visited two schools. Most of these schools are struggling with how to best integrate immigrants into Danish society. The principals told us about each of their schools and how they work with students and their families. Then we visited elementary and middle school classrooms. We were able to talk to the students as they seem always eager to practice speaking in English - which even the 4th graders seem to be doing well.
The teachers we saw in the classrooms were masterful in their presentations of content and running their classrooms There was a little direct presentation of subject matter, but most classtime students spent working alone or with others. The classroom atmosphere was very relaxed and informal, but most students were focused on the tasks at hand.
Our students seemed to enjoy answering questions from Odense students about life in America.
In the afternoon we visited an Educational Resource Center, which provides teachers with educationsl materials and conducts workships for teachers. There really isn't anything quite like it in the USA. It is economical because many schools can share materials.
This evening we were invited to Allan Feldskou's home for a big dinner. Allan is one of the Danish proncipals with whom we are friends. The other principals who are our friends were also there along with their superintendent. It was a spectaular meal! Grilled Polish sausages for appetizers. grilled pork or beef steaks, potatoes, bernaise sauce, 3 salads, and many tasty desserts.
Please check out some of the students' blogs for more information and different perspectives.
